New Possibilities for Dogs with Disabilities

Derby's story

Derby is a Husky mix born with smaller forearms and no front paws, making it difficult for him to get around and enjoy the active lifestyle he longed for. His disability also made it difficult for his original owners to care for him, and they planned to take Derby to a shelter where he would be euthanized. Peace and paws, a dog rescue group in Hillsborough, New Hampshire, decided to give Derby another chance.

Derby's new foster mother Tara Anderson first bought Derby a wheelchair to get around. She saw a huge improvement in his mobility, but it wasn't enough to give him an unrestricted life. She wanted Derby to be able to run around and play with other dogs. Tara works as the Director of CJP Product Management at 3D Systems and decided to use 3D printing technology to give Derby the ability to run and play like other dogs.

3d printingBecause it is computerized, models can be created and recreated without the need to sculpt each model by hand. That way, the team assigned to Derby's prosthetic legs could quickly create and adjust the models once they saw what would work for Derby. For Derby, prostheses were made based on the model of "elbow cups" with large loops on the ground so that they do not get caught in the ground while he is walking on the lawn. They're both comfortable and durable enough for Derby to wear while running and playing with all of their other dogs.

The Portanova family officially adopted Derby in August, where he enjoys a life of running and playing. His owners, Sherri and Dom, run 2-3 miles with him every day and enjoy exploring Derby on their own. The little extra time and help allowed Derby to enjoy the life of a four paw puppy and continue to play with the help of his prosthesis. Click to watch Derby run and play Here.
