Ocicat. The Ocicat was an exciting, exotic development.

Ocicats look wild, but make great pet cats with a tame and loving character!

The Ocicat was an exciting, exotic development. This is one of the most unique hybrid cat breeds that has the seductive beauty of a wild cat but is a purely domestic cat. Its fur has distinct spots on a light background that extend from the ears to almost the tip of the tail. Its name Octicat is said to come from a combination of the similarity to the wild ocelot and its earlier name Accicat. The name "Accicat" came from the fact that this cat was a random hybrid combination.

The first random cat with this spotted coat pattern was named Tonga and was born in the 1960s. Ms. Virginia Daly of Michigan tried hybrid crosses, mating a hybrid Abyssinian x Seal Point Siamese female with a Chocolate Point Siamese male. Tonga was a pretty little thing with an ivory-colored coat and speckles of gold. Neither the kitten's coat color nor pattern was recognized at this point, so Tonga was neutered and sold as a pet. However, this kitten piqued some curiosity. At first Ms. Daly, and then other dedicated cat lovers, tried to selectively breed a small, graceful, spotted domestic cat that resembled a wildcat.

The wonderful ocicats seen in the United States today are the glorious result of that effort, along with a few other supplements. The American Shorthair cat, a natural breed of cats, was added to the mix for added color and height. There is also a long-haired variant of Ocicat. Ocicats come in all tabby cat colors as well as silver colors with contrasting, well-defined spots. Like the coat of the Abyssinian, each hair has multiple bands of color, except for those at the tip of the tail, which are usually black. The coat has a natural sheen, but is soft and short, which makes this cat an easy-care breed that only requires weekly grooming.

The Ocicat offers an exotic appearance without the wild personality traits. They look powerful, but they're neither smart nor clunky. They are considered to be of medium weight, which means that they are medium in size and well proportioned. They have muscular legs, strong paws and a long tail. The head is wedge-shaped with moderately large ears and large almond-shaped eyes. It also has a moderate voice.

The Ocicat is an energetic cat who is very active and playful. They are very social but with an even temperament and are also very long-lived with few health problems. Like the Siamese, they can attach themselves more to one person than to another. They can be dominant in other cats as well. The Ocicat is known for being unusually easy to train and for being able to be trained for use on a leash. This breed makes a great family cat that doesn't have any special grooming, diet, or health needs.

background The Ocicat was accidentally manufactured in 1964 by Virginia Daly of Berkeley, Michigan. Virginia Daly attempted to breed an Abyssinian Pointed Siamese by crossing a Chocolate Point Siamese male with a Seal Point Siamese and an Abyssinian hybrid female. Surprisingly, the litter produced contained a gold-spotted male kitten. This kitten was called Tonga and was neutered and sold as a pet because it did not fit into this particular breeding program. However, the prospect of a new spotted breed caught the interest of Virginia Daly and she kept the other spotted kittens that were produced.

Another American breeder, Tom Brown, started a long-term breeding program. Other breeders introduced the American Shorthair to their breeding programs, increasing the size of the cat. The Ocicat achieved championship status in the USA in 1987. It was introduced in the UK in the late 1980s. Also in the 1980s, Karen Dupuis in Germany developed a separate European line of Ocicats.

The name of this breed is a cross between "Ocelot" and "Cat" as it resembles an Ocelot but is a domestic cat. Two names that were also used in the early years of this breed were "Ocellete" as it resembles a small ocelot and "Accicat" as it is a ...
