The 20 Most Fatal Poisonings Of Cats

In 2020, the American Animal Poison Control Center (APCC) released its data on poisoning in cats. It is the best information we have about household hazards for our feline friends.

From a cat owner's point of view, it contains two important lists: the Top 5 reported poisonings and the Top 20 deaths. As you will see, these are very different.

The top 5 poisons in cats

  1. Lilies, typically cut flowers in vases
  2. Just the thing for permethrin flea treatments for dogs
  3. Glow sticks or jewelry (i.e. dibutyl phthalate)
  4. Ibuprofen (Nurofen®, Advil®, etc.)
  5. Dracaena Plants (most often lucky bamboo)

These are good to know and easy to prevent.

Seriously as they are, only Dracaena appears in the next list. You will see that it is also mentioned in My guide to safe plants for a cat garden.

The top 20 deadliest cat poisons

The APCC also listed their known deaths in order of the percentage of reported cats that died. I've linked each poison to its relevant Wikipedia page if you want to read more. See my comments afterwards.

Main results

This list helps us understand which toxins are most important. It even highlights two that have never been on our radar. These are:

  • Bifenthrin: Used in Australia in long-acting residual form to control pests outdoors. Cats are likely to be poisoned if it gets on their bodies and they lick it off.
  • Minoxidil: a liquid human hair loss medicine of the male pattern sold as Regaine®. Contact with cats caused respiratory and heart failure.

The others are less surprising and mostly self-explanatory. But we're not done yet ...

Problems with the list

The APCC receives reports directly from the public. Therefore, although it gives us a unique insight directly into US households, it is also severely affected by false reports and incorrect attributions.

All drugs are marked with an asterisk are commonly used drugs

of cats. In any case, it is almost impossible for them to have the death rates described. Some of them are used on sick or dying cats, leading to the owners blaming them, not the underlying disease. Others are used just so frequently that many cats die while ingesting them. Similar, borax

is a poison that is generally considered to be of low toxicity. I also get a lot of inquiries about it (Ant Rid®), but it seems mostly harmless for pets.

Therefore, here is a revised list of cat toxins in the order of their toxicity.

The top 10 USA cat poisons In conclusion, let me say that I have grappled with the question of whether to publish this list in the light ofthe recent flood of baits in Adelaide parks

. However, when you look at the types of toxicities these are, they are not on purpose. They are caused by accidental access to household toxins.

Only if we know it can we effectively prevent it. Swirski, AL, Pearl, DL, Berke, O. & O'Sullivan, TL (2020). Pet exposure to potentially toxic substances reported to a US National Poison Center from 2005 to 2014.Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association ,257
