In 2020, the American Animal Poison Control Center (APCC) released its data on poisoning in dogs. It is the best information we have about household hazards for our canine friends.
From a dog owner's point of view, it contains two important lists: the Top 5 reported poisonings and the Top 20 deaths. As you will see, these are very different.
The top 5 poisons from dogs
- chocolate
- Ibuprofen (Nurofen®, Advil®, etc.)
- Food containing sucrose
- Nitrogen-based fertilizers
- Acetaminophen (paracetamol)
These are good to know and easy to prevent. Though sucrose is hard to spot the problem.
The top 20 deadliest dog poisons
The APCC also listed their known deaths in order of the percentage of dogs reported that died. I've linked each poison to its relevant Wikipedia page if you want to read more. See my comments afterwards.
Main results
This list helps us understand which toxins are of paramount importance. You can see one category stands out: Medication
nine are common human treatments whether prescribed or not. Dogs gain access if they are left lying around carelessly or if they are dropped in their presence. Those marked with an asterisk
are also used in dogs.
- The rest is caused by access to common household poisons. Except for just two:
- Blue-green algae come from standing water sources
Phenylbutazone is an outdated anti-inflammatory agent that is mainly used in horses
If anything from this new evidence says anything, it is that most poisonings are accidental and unintentional. And these dogs will try things that you would never expect to eat.
I certainly learned a lot. Mainly to be a lot more careful about what I'm leaving out. Connected: Adelaide pet poisoning |
